EQ: How did the geography of ancient Egypt influence life in the region?
The Egyptians were protected from invaders due to their geographical features. For example, they had the Mediterranean Sea to the north along with the Nile Delta. This body of water blocks off land on the other side. If intruders were to come to Egypt, they would have to go by boat. Also, the eastern and western deserts prevented invaders from the east and west. The deserts were a hard climate to travel through. Therefore, nobody could walk across to conquer Egypt. Furthermore, the cataracts in the Nile to the south protected the Egyptians from lands below them. The cataracts were river rapids. This shows that lands south of Egypt would have to travel by water to reach the civilization. This influenced life in the region because it protected the Egyptians, allowing them to create more inventions and expand their growing civilization.

Geography impacted the ancient Egyptians by affecting where they settled. For example, the settlements are all along the Nile River. The places closer to the delta are spaced closer together compared to the civilizations further down the river, which are spaced further apart. Also, the geography of the deserts surrounding the ancient Egyptians affected them too. It prevented invaders from crossing the scorching climate. Furthermore, the geography forced the people to stay near the river and away from the "red land". The geography had a large impact on
The geography of ancient Egypt helped agriculture develop because agriculture depended on the location of natural features. The Nile River is a source of water for irrigation canals. Therefore, the farmers must live near the river to work. Also, the Nile River, a part of the geography, was a source for an irrigation canal. Irrigation systems watered the crops. This helped develop the agriculture in ancient Egypt by making advances in the technology. The Nile River was important to the ancient Egyptians because it was essential for their survival. It provided silt for good farming every time it flooded, it was a water source for the irrigation canals, and it was a source for drinking water for the people and the animals. The Egyptians were protected by their physical environment because to the east and west, there were deserts which prevented invaders from coming, and to the north there is the Mediterranean Sea. (McTighe) There is a delta and many marshes that are obstacles for intruders. This protected the ancient Egyptians, so they didn't have the same problems as the Mesopotamians. The flooding of the Nile affected the ancient Egyptians because it was necessary for a good harvest since the floods contained silt which is good for farming. The good soil would need to go on the fields for there to be a good harvest that year or else the Egyptian economy would suffer. |
